7 Steps to Building a Friendship with God

After finishing our book, The Dimensions of True Self – A Workbook for Living and Leading Authentically, I read a book called Friendship with God – An Uncommon Dialogue by Neale Donald Walsch. He is the popular author of the trilogy, Conversations with God, books 1 to 3. The title of this book, Friendship with God, was very intriguing, and the amazing revelation was that this book reveals the same theme as our book: being your true self.

Let’s begin. Most of us believe in a higher power and many religions teach us about this higher power or God. We are taught to fear, respect, serve God and that if we sin, then this same God will punish us. If we do not serve God properly or go against him, he will send us to hell.

So the title ‘Friendship with God’ was indeed very enticing. The author went through great hardships before he started channeling these books. What he reveals in this and his previous books, are the misconceptions we have about how we can be our true selves and also be friends with God. We think ‘who we are’ is what other people think we should be, but we are all different yet united as one. We are all connected to each other by our own energies; we breathe the same air, we all eat, work, talk and live on the same planet.

We are all made of love, according to the author. To be our true selves, we need to love ourselves first, and only then will we be able to love all nature’s creations. By living in harmony with our environment, we are living our true lives.  And by living authentically or in the image of God, we become friends with him.

So how do we learn to live our true lives and be friends with God? This book provides us with 7 steps that can lead us to be friends with God and live ‘who we really are’. These steps are:

  1. Knowing God, by knowing your own true self first. Why are you here?
  2. Trusting God by trusting your own intuition.
  3. Loving yourself before you can truly love anyone else, including God.
  4. Embracing your own true self before you can embrace God and his gifts.
  5. Using your own creative energy, gentle wisdom and pure love; these traits are installed in us by the divine force in the universe.
  6. Helping yourself first to the abundance in the universe, and then you can help spread God’s love for all living beings.
  7. Thanking God, as this brings blessings more easily.

The above 7 steps can be followed in any order. We can start at the bottom and thank God first, and then help ourselves to his abundance in nature. We learn something new and change a little everyday without realizing. However, many of us fear change when in fact change is the only constant in our lives.

So, we need to consciously live our lives harmoniously and in ways that benefit all. We are made of joy and in this state, we cannot cause harm to others. Choose what you want to do with your lives and make plans to do it deliberately, harmoniously and beneficially.

In Part 2, I will discuss how we keep learning and changing in positive ways. How the people around the world are awakening to this higher level of consciousness and living their true lives. Share with me if you are living a meaningful life and how it is bringing you joy and peace.
