Doctor Reinvents Career at 68: Never Too Late

This past week, Dr. Margaret Cornelius launched her new direction in lifestyle medicine as a solution to the ever-increasing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) crisis. Her focus is on wellness, whether a person already has a health issue, has risk factors for NCDs or is ‘feeling well’ but facing dietary and activity challenges.

I’m so proud to call her my mother. She is a retired medical doctor who is a trained specialist in diabetes, and is now studying for a certification in lifestyle medicine.

Margaret has been retired for 5 years but always knew she wanted to mentor youth and help heal the NCD crisis in Fiji, where we have 1 in 3 deaths from diabetes, which is a manageable and reversible condition with the right diet and exercise. Now, she’s making her dreams come true as she serves her community through free public talks on nutrition and NCDs. She is also offering paid wellness coaching, cooking classes and demos, and youth mentoring services. Additionally, Margaret serves on the board of the South Pacific Society of Lifestyle Medicine as their Education Director, mentoring those who are receiving training in lifestyle medicine.

Underpinning Margaret’s approach is an integration of medical and behavioral science-based tools using Alchemus Prime’s Diamond model. As healthcare moves into a more personalized paradigm, Margaret’s work on the achievement and maintenance of wellness places empowerment back where it belongs: in the body and mind of each individual who is willing and ready.

Dovetailing with the budding organics movement in Fiji, and a group of entrepreneurs offering organic juices or plant-based foods, Margaret’s work is perfectly timed. Her coaching focuses on practical, immediately implementable steps to get closer to optimal health. Alchemus Prime’s recipe books form the foundation of her cooking lessons, which focus on flavor, satiation, variety, and nutrition, but most especially, forming a loving relationship with food.

Alchemus Prime is proud to have Margaret’s vast experience and her body of work as part of our portfolio of services. As we expand, we look forward to increasing our ability to positively impact lives. Wellness belongs to everyone!
