March for Climate, Jobs, and Justice, but is that Enough?

Today, September 8, 2018, marks a day of action. People in California will march to ask for a shift away from new fossil fuels, and toward 100% renewable energy in just ways. This is the biggest march of its kind on the West Coast.

My personal contribution to this cause is through my daily work at the nexus of climate change and wellness as a coach, facilitator, author, teacher, and speaker. However, my heart also remains embedded in one very important aspect of this movement: our diets, and how our dietary choices have the power to amplify or reduce animal, human, and planetary suffering.

One of the aspects about this particular march that I love is that we are harnessing the creative aspects of our talents through art, poetry, and theater. I contributed a poem to this movement, and would like to share it with you here. It’s about veganic agriculture, which I wrote about recently, and spoke about in Mornings with Marilyn, connecting the dots between climate change, Hurricane Lane, our diets, and veganic agriculture. I hope you will support the cause in person, if you are in San Francisco, or in spirit wherever you are!

let’s begin today
the path to life
is through life
beautiful
organic
and vegan
farming
is veganic:
with animals
free to live
full lives
not as commodities
but as individuals
in a world
rapidly warming
we need love
not slaughter
we need land
restored
with forest
and water
there’s a gentle
and peaceful way
to a brighter tomorrow
let’s begin today
transforming
agriculture
into mindfulness
we uproot
violence
and plant
kindness
allowing life
to commune
in balance
we embody a new vision
out of a past
filled with blindness
choosing
life
in a way
that is complete
where
we cooperate
and share
instead of fighting
to compete…
in a world
desperate
for healing
veganics
offers
a path
that is kind
and revealing
a soulful
harmony
of life
and food
feeding the hungry
and “doing well
by doing good”*
*A phrase often used by my late mentor and advisor, and eminent climatologist, Steve Schneider.
This poem is in support of the Climate March on September 8, and associated events by Seed the Commons and Art Build for RISE for Climate hosted by 350 SF & P4 & CFAA as part of the upcoming Global Climate Action Summit.
