4 Reasons You Should Attend UN Women’s Film Festival in 2019

About 8 months ago, I started serving as Board Director – Chief of Staff, at the US National Committee for UN Women – San Francisco Bay Area Chapter.I chose to serve in this organization because I was a victim of abuse at age 2, and have since written books on trauma and self-love; I want to help empower women and girls everywhere, which is UN Women’s mission. On the board, I help manage the team as we collectively find ways to raise awareness about the plight of women and girls, and gather funds to directly support UN Women’s work.

I’m excited to be attending my first ever Global Voices Film Festival (GVFF), one of our signature events. This is the third one we are hosting, and there is an amazing line up of female narratives through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and 360 films.

THE GVFF came about as a compelling way to fulfill our mission. The goal of the  GVFF is to showcase women directors, who currently make up a meagre 8% of all film directors. Research suggests that many other aspects surrounding representation of women in film and television also need improvement, including film reviews written by women, on-screen and behind-the-scenes employment of women in the industry, and more.

The GVFF is being held on May 16 at GoPro’s headquarters in San Mateo, California, and on May 18 at Lucasfilm, with the afterparty at the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. We have some intrepid panelists speaking on May 16, including leaders from Google and Change.org. On May 18 we have keynote speakers including Emmy® Award-winner Athena Portillo, Executive Producer at Lucasfilm. The afterparty will feature industry insiders, film aficionados and the filmmakers.

As if all that wasn’t enough, why else you should come? You will:

  • Experience narratives about abuse, incarceration, basketball, recycling, and more.
  • Enjoy interactive VR/AR and 360 films.
  • Network with stellar people, including my dedicated board members, chapter members, and sponsors, including 20th Century Fox, Salesforce, GroPro, Lyft, and YouTube VR.
  • Support a cause that directly contributes to humanity’s wellbeing by uplifting women and girls globally.

Come and be part of the filmmakers’ bold vision and help change the representation of gender in film. Get your tickets now!
